Tasteful Advertising

© Copyright 2008 FarmgirlFare.com, the award-winning blog where even though our cucumber plants in the kitchen garden are just now beginning to flower (running late!) and our melon seeds are still in their little packets (maybe next year?), we've been feasting on enormous wedges of sweet, juicy melon for breakfast (we're out of cake) and more crisp, cool cucumbers than we care to count (is it possible for a person to eat too many cucumbers?)—thanks to our new enterprising and green thumbed Amish neighbors. Oh, and some of the best sweet corn (freshly picked while I waited) we've ever eaten, too.

  2. Love the picture...
We have a Mennonite Community (same as the Amish)very close to where we live that brings goods to sell at a local weekend flea market.
The women all bring baked goods such as homemade spice cakes and breads.... the smell coming from their table is HEAVEN!

  4. Mmm. I buy bread from an Amish woman every Saturday at the farmers' market. Her wheat + flaxseed is delicious, and her booth is always mobbed. Her work speaks for itself.

  5. Love the notice about no sales on Sunday - I'm old enough to remember the "Blue Laws" and it wasn't a bad thing. You planned ahead a bit and people spent time on Sundays with church and their families or hobbies or relaxing to prepare for a work week. Don't know when it became the norm that we had to have commerce 7 days a week - but I am sure not selling cucumbers on Sunday isn't hurting these folks a bit. Lovely to have gardening folks nearby isn't it?

  6. I love this picture and wish I had a billboard like that in my neighborhood, too! And, no, I don't think you can eat too many cucumbers - but I am a pickle lover.

  7. That sure beats the usual roadside advertising. Sad that you are out of cake, though. Me too. It was even on my list for today, but then we lost power for a few hours and now my day is sort of gone to the dogs - and not the cute fluffy pups either! (My BFF is probably expecting a call that probably won't come today. Because. I. Suck.)

  8. Public Service Announcement here, as I'm very involved in the Amish community locally:

Do NOT discuss a pregnancy w/ a woman or her children (ie, so you're getting a new baby soon!). It is not discussed, often until children are in their mid-teens. Mums the word!

Lately Amish friends complain to me about English being so darn nosy :)

December 2015 update: Hi! For some reason I can't figure out, Blogger hasn't been letting me leave comments on my own blog (!) for the last several months, so I've been unable to respond to your comments and questions. My apologies for any inconvenience! You're always welcome to email me: farmgirlfare AT gmail DOT com.

Hi! Thanks for visiting Farmgirl Fare and taking the time to write. While I'm not always able to reply to every comment, I receive and enjoy reading them all.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and I especially love hearing about your experiences with my recipes. Comments on older posts are always welcome!

Please note that I moderate comments, so if I'm away from the computer it may be a while before yours appears.

I try my best to answer all questions, though sometimes it takes me a few days. And sometimes, I'm sorry to say, they fall through the cracks, and for that I sincerely apologize.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy your e-visits to our farm!
