Meet Esmeralda at Age One Day, Born Sunday July 6th
Is this the cutest birthday present a farmgirl could ask for or what? The other day I said I would post more newborn photos of Dinky from last July that I never shared, but before I could get around to it, a new baby donkey was born! And guess what? That mother isn't Daphne - it's Dolores!
On Saturday I noticed that Dolores actually looked wider than Daphne (who I'm sure will someday actually have a baby), on Sunday morning the donkeys were nowhere to be found (which is normal since they're free to roam the farm), and then while doing chores late Sunday afternoon I realized there were only three members of our inseparable four member donkey gang down by the barn. My baby animal radar immediately perked up. And sure enough, I found Dolores standing at the edge of the front field with little Esmeralda by her side. And yes, Donkey Doodle Dandy is the daddy! Mother and baby are both doing fine, and of course I'm just thrilled that it's a girl.
More photos soon, but right now a glass of birthday champagne and some freshly picked sweet corn from our new Amish neighbors (because 12 miles down the road is considered the neighborhood when your 'next door' neighbor lives two miles away) are loudly calling my name.

© Copyright 2008 FarmgirlFare.com, the award-winning blog where Dinky was born on July 2nd 2007, Esmeralda was born July 6th 2008, and it takes an average of 12 months to have a baby donkey — which means Donkey Doodle Daddy got right to work. Who's the man? Oh yeah, and I was born 40 years ago today — which I still can't quite believe.

Happy Birthday Susan!

ReplyDeleteSorry, FG. I just got all excited about an itty-bitty donkey. On my way home from work every day, I pass a cow pasture that has a pair of donkeys guarding the cows. There's a jenny and a jack, and I can only hope for sweet donkey teensyness very soon.
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Hip-hip-HOORAY!
Happy birthday and as the Greeks say, kronia polla (many more years)! Love your pictures of all your creatures, but the donkeys are my slight favorite. Do you still have the llamas?
