Sunday Farm Photo: Very Cool

Not as Long Lasting as a Rock Heart, But I Love
Them Just the Same

© Copyright 2008 FarmgirlFare.com, the award-winning blog where I suppose it's fitting that the first day of winter is our coldest yet, but I still have trouble with forecasts of '1 degree' and 'wind chills as cold as 15 below.' Earlier this evening I changed from my boots into my slippers, which I usually tuck next to the woodstove but had left by the side of the bed this morning in a rush to answer the ringing phone. As one of them made a sort of sucking sound and seemed to be stuck when I picked it up, I thought of the water I'd accidentally spilled from my glass in the wee hours of the morning. My slipper was frozen to the floor. Just don't tell my California foodie mom—she's arriving tomorrow for a holiday visit (packing custom-filled boxes of See's Candy and limes from her tree of course), and I don't know if she can handle that kind of cold. There's nothing like vacationing in an uninsulated Missouri shack.

  1. Awww...LOVE the heart in the snow :) And that's cold if your slipper froze to the floor. Brrrr!

  2. A snowy heart leaf - you definitely have an eye to find those Susan. Oh my I feel so for your mother - I am not a cold weather person and the frozen to the floor thing - that's just wrong! LOL - I know she'll have a beautiful time with you and you'll have a beautiful time with boxes of See's and fresh limes!

  5. Unless it's vacationing in an uninsulated stone house on a lake.
Which is why our house is like a B&B in the summer, and yet, STRANGELY, we have no visitors in the winter.

When do you get to move into the new (presumably insulated) house?

  6. Hi Susan,

Brrrr, I'm in Michigan and we had 6 degrees last night... I hope your mom doesn't change her mind, I'm with Kristin, when do you get to move into your new Bakery/Home???
    Enjoy your Limes, YUM

  7. Please tell us that your new house has insulation!!! That's just too cold - no matter how good the wood stove is!

Happy Holidays to all of you and enjoy your happy visit with your Mom!

  8. I love how you find all of those hearts around. Your Mom will be plenty warm during her visit. She has the warmth of her loved ones to keep her happy and comfortable.

I love your humor, your photos and your writing. Keep it up, I look forward to every post.

  9. I believe you just topped all of my ice stories. I have lived in a few of those "air conditioned" homes, and it isn't fun. Just keep the wood in the stove, bread in the oven and a hot cup of coffee within reach. Someday, you can include all of these experiences in that novel you ARE going to write.

  10. Love the snow heart! Or is that an ice heart?

I'm spending my first winter in Central Missouri - having moved here from Texas last summer. I was reading your blog last winter from the warm Gulf Coast. Now I'm reading it here in MO and looking forward to Thursday when it's supposed to warm up to 38 and be sunny.

    I have lost my mind.

  11. I was thinking about you just recently: http://rurality.blogspot.com/2008/12/serendipigoat.html

Then I visited my friend ( http://edificerex.blogspot.com/2008/12/this-old-heart-of-mine.html ) and we talked about you - were your ears burning? :)

  12. Fresh limes - yuuuuuummmmmm. So, that is the best cold-house ice story yet. But what are you going to make with the Limes? Citrus-starved Vermonters want to know...

  13. Well another wonderful photo, icy heart warm hands is that the way it goes? Your mom will be fine, just take those limes. Squeeze a few in to a couple of margritas. If not that than a christmas key lime pie. She won't even notice the ice on the floor. My door froze shut here in central Mo. We can tell stories galore. But we don't have to face the smog, the traffic and all the people. I can say all these things with impunity:) I'm a born and raised California girl. I love it there, but I also have come to love Missouri as well. Have a wonderful holiday. I bet your mom will be warmed by all the good food, love and laughter.
Merry Christmas and may you all be blessed.

  14. The joke around here is "The thermometer's broken; there's no temperature!" Husband heard a southerner say that at a Packer game (temp was 0), and that was enough to make it a standard line.

  15. That picture is worthy of Andy Goldsworthy!

  16. Susan, Merry Christmas! Stay warm and have a wonderful visit with your mom and your See's candy! We just picked up a couple of boxes the other night too...one for us to have on hand and one for my parents.

  17. Hi Farmgirl Susan's Mum! Merry Christmas! Grab a chicken or 6 to keep you warm - and do NOT try to lick the drawer handles in the kitchen - from the sounds of it, your tongue may stick and you won't be able to get back to warm & sunny CA until the Spring thaw...in June! :)

  18. Mmm... See's candy - we opened ours today. Have a very Merry Christmas!

December 2015 update: Hi! For some reason I can't figure out, Blogger hasn't been letting me leave comments on my own blog (!) for the last several months, so I've been unable to respond to your comments and questions. My apologies for any inconvenience! You're always welcome to email me: farmgirlfare AT gmail DOT com.

Hi! Thanks for visiting Farmgirl Fare and taking the time to write. While I'm not always able to reply to every comment, I receive and enjoy reading them all.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and I especially love hearing about your experiences with my recipes. Comments on older posts are always welcome!

Please note that I moderate comments, so if I'm away from the computer it may be a while before yours appears.

I try my best to answer all questions, though sometimes it takes me a few days. And sometimes, I'm sorry to say, they fall through the cracks, and for that I sincerely apologize.
