Monday Dose of Cute and Loss

Annette and Her Newborn Twins 4-7-10
Annette and Her Newborn Twins on 4/7/10

© 2010 FarmgirlFare.com, the mourning foodie farm blog where after a very long, very hot, very exhausting, and very frustrating day spent tending to a very sick ewe (one of your best of course) only to have her die that night (which meant you then had to deal with her very large dead body at 11pm—and happened to be the only person home at the time), it's always a good idea to spend some time looking back at happier and cuter times while you're crying your eyes out. (Cake for breakfast helps, too.) Rest in peace, beautiful Annette. And thank you for giving me Cary.

  4. So sorry... life can be a roller coaster on a a farm...it is still quite sad when one loses a beloved animal... especially when they are cared for with love.

  5. I am so sorry for your loss. My beloved cat, Jezebel, 19-years old and calico, died in March. My beloved puppy, 20-months old and absolutely joyous, died in April.
I wish you all the very best.

  11. Oh Susan, I am so sorry you lost Annette.
What about her twins? Are they big enough to get on without her - or are they being let in the house like Cary?

  12. We lost our first ewe, Helen, on Friday after doctoring her for a day and a half. I'm still not sure what the cause was. Do you know what caused Annette's death?

I did as you and posted several happy pictures of Helen on my farm journal, but I still miss her and I know her twins miss their Mum.
    Happy times to come...

  14. So sorry - losing an animals is always difficult and one who just had beautiful twins is even rougher. Sorry you were by yourself also - dealing with the literaly dead weight is a lot harder than one would think. Cake for breakfast is a wise form of self medication.

  21. Someone once told me "Where there's livestock, there's dead stock". I get it, but it doesn't make me feel any less sad when I lose a friend. And you're always closest to your breeding animals.

Someone else told me that real farmers do cry. I hope you have lots of her offspring and it brings you some relief (I'd keep eating cake as well though, just to be safe). Take care.

  24. Susan, My sincere sympathies on the passing of dear sweet Annette. Although many see them as only animals we all know they are dear and tender personalities. I hope you look around and see Annette in the faces of her youngsters and of course Cary and that your memories give you reason to smile after the tears are dry.

  35. I'm so sorry for the loss of sweet Annette. Will you be bottle feeding her little lambies?

Loss is the hardest part of farming, I think. Even when we know their purpose on our farms, I think we still get attached, and that's what helps us show our human-ness.

  36. How hard for you! I am sure Annette knew how much you cared for her. It is such a helpless feeling to do all you can and know to do and then it still not be enough. It seems our time with the animals we love is never long enough. I always enjoy reading your blog - in the happy times and the sad ones.

  37. I am so sorry. It probably isn't much consolation now, but Annette had a great life with you. She was loved, cared for, laughed at, and celebrated. That's a lot of joy for a housepet, imagine how blessed a sheep felt to get all that in her (too short) life.

    ReplyDelete
  38. So sad... I hope you can take comfort in knowing that Annette was not alone, and that she knew someone was taking loving care of her right up until the end.

  39. I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope things are looking up and her baby is doing okay.

  40. So sorry for the heartbreak you are feeling and that you had to deal with it by yourself. Take comfort in knowing that you gave her the best life she could have had anywhere. Hope your hunky farmguy is back home. Tell him to give you a big hug from me.

  43. I'm so sorry about your loss. We raise goats and grow extremely attached to them - it's so hard to lose one. I still tear up over the two does we lost this year.

  45. so, so sorry. Annette was lucky to have had you and you were lucky to have had her. You gave her a beautiful life, and she gave you hers and Cary's. big hugs.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh how sad. I know you love them all as family....it made me really sad when I saw it was Cary's mom. It gave me a connection to her.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh, how sad for you. I don't have words to tell you how sorry I am. Your posts and furry critters give me a smile every time I read your blog. I feel your loss. Not nearly as much as you do, of course, but I am hurting with and for you. I am so sorry you had to go through this alone. Snuggle those babies in her stead.

  48. My heart goes out to you at this time of sadness. I agree looking back at the good times is a good thing. Eating cake is always a good thing. (((HUGS))))

  50. Susan-
My heart felt condolences on your loss-from a long time reader/follower (like so many that stop by here - we know exactly how much this meant to you) . Susan from Naperville

  51. My heart goes out to you and I'm sure that Annette's babies are missing her too. Life can really be a bitch sometimes, but then one of the animals senses something is wrong and then does something unexpected and funny and somehow we smile again. Love you, your blog, and all your lovable animals. Jeanie in Upstate NY

  52. Susan - I am so sorry for your loss - I know how much they mean to you. I think it takes a special person to do farming.. my sister does it also and I am so sad to hear some some of the stories, they live in Texas and the snakes are the worst enemies to their goats and to their dogs.. :(
    Consider yourself hugged from Texas!

December 2015 update: Hi! For some reason I can't figure out, Blogger hasn't been letting me leave comments on my own blog (!) for the last several months, so I've been unable to respond to your comments and questions. My apologies for any inconvenience! You're always welcome to email me: farmgirlfare AT gmail DOT com.

Hi! Thanks for visiting Farmgirl Fare and taking the time to write. While I'm not always able to reply to every comment, I receive and enjoy reading them all.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and I especially love hearing about your experiences with my recipes. Comments on older posts are always welcome!

Please note that I moderate comments, so if I'm away from the computer it may be a while before yours appears.

I try my best to answer all questions, though sometimes it takes me a few days. And sometimes, I'm sorry to say, they fall through the cracks, and for that I sincerely apologize.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy your e-visits to our farm!
