Monday Dose of Cute: It's that Time Again

Yawning Topaz
Nap Time!
Thank you for all the sweet comments and e-mails after my last post. So many kind words and wishes! I'm truly overwhelmed.
My leg is healing, and I'm already able to get around better, but the drugs are wiping me out. I mostly just sleep. I don't have much of an appetite (which is so not me). I can't believe I've already been home from the hospital a week. I still haven't seen many of the animals, and I have no idea what's happening in the kitchen garden. I don't really have any urge to go outside. All this should feel very strange but doesn't—so you know I'm on some heavy duty medication. I'm sure the 106° heat index has something to do with it, too. Damn, it's hot. I'm still missing Robin terribly of course.

Next month was supposed to mark some pretty big changes around here; exciting things that would hopefully allow me to devote more time to blogging and writing. Maybe even be able to stop turning down book deals and finally start working on one. (Thanks to all of you who have told me that you'd love for me to write a book!) This whole snakebite thing has thrown a wrench into those plans, but hopefully I'll be settling into a new groove here soon—probably when I run out of drugs.

2010 was to be the year I got caught up with everything both on and offline, stopped overextending myself, and organized my insanely cluttered life (oh, and lost 15 pounds), but just the opposite has been happening, starting with that stupid flu I had from December to April. But I've come to realize there's no sense in getting worked up about it all (not that I still don't once in a while), just like there's no sense fighting the urge to sleep 19 hours a day. This is simply how things are right now.

Fortunately I have a huge backlog of photos and recipes to share, a stack of new recipes I want to try, and obviously a bunch of wonderful readers to share them with. I'm really looking forward to getting back to work—as soon as I wake up from my next nap.

Meanwhile, want to get to know our Tough Tortie Topaz better?

  1. I...I don't have any idea how I missed that post. That's way, way too much to be experiencing all at once.

(gentle hugs) ... sounds like it's been rough.

  2. Oh My God...

Just came back to Bloglandia after a few weeks away on vacation - and all of this happened.
As I read on and on and more and more bad things happened I almost couldn't belive it. Did a black cat by any chance cross the street in front of your car when you drove back from the airport ? (LOL)
I am so glad you are feeling slightly better and feel so sorry for you that Robin died.
You had your share of sad goodbyes this year, and I hope this was the last one.
2010 is only half gone - and you will have time to catch up with your plans later. When the heat is not so fierce, the chocolate cakes are all eaten and the farmgirl is once again on the go.
I wish you a great day in front of the fan. Hopefully with a really big scoop of your favorite icecream.

  3. very gentle hugs, take it easy on yourself sweetie now isn't the time to be worrying about the garden or other best-laid plans, it will all get done with time or be salvageable, best thing you can do all round for everyone is rest and take it easy for now x

  4. I guess this must be a time of reflection and introspection for you--though not necessarily the best way to achieve that. We hope that you continue to heal well and you are in our thoughts. My husband was a stunned as I was by your story.

Personally, I love ANY photos you share...will love seeing the backlog of pics and recipes.

    Thinking of you--

  5. Well, the year isn't over yet! And maybe the drugs killing your appetite will take care of those 15 pounds.

How's that for the silver lining?

  6. That is such a cute picture of the yawning kitty :) Especially since we know the story of how you got her. She's a lucky girl.

As for you - follow your body's lead and nap. When you are ready to hit the to-do list again, you'll know it b/c you'll feel all edgy and desperate to get out there & do SOMETHING. If you're still taking painkillers they can make you really, REALLY sleepy (that's why they say not to use power equipment at the same time, dontcha know?)

  7. Hope both of you feel better everyday - so sorry for the loss of Robin and your cats. We love our animals so much and that makes it hard to say goodbye to them - but the joy we (and they)have in life is so worth it.

  8. I know - me, too! This was my year for getting caught up, then I had a back injury in January. The sleeping thing, I really get, it's not how you usually roll but you have to do it. A really smart friend told me to take it easy, that our bodies take longer to heal now that we're older (as in not 25). It's frustrating, I know, but you'll be so happy later if you rest up, and let yourself heal. I still haven't painted my living room, or reorganized my desk, or any of that other stuff, but I'm glad I didn't push too hard and make it all worse.

    Feel better! Eat cake!
    Cheers, Andrea

  9. Sounds like you are doing a little better now. I am still reeling from yesterdays post about all your troubles. I don't think I have ever actually known anyone (and I do feel like I know you) that was bitten by a rattle snake. Twice! And, I am amazed and thankful you lived through it!!
Susan, you are precious to all of us that read you blog, so take really good care of yourself...I know you are....even if it means staying away from the computer for awhile. We will understand. Your attitude about 'Things Are The Way They Are-Oh Well' is really good. It's harmful to fret over things you can't do anything about. I am sending warm hugs and healing thoughts. Get Well Soon....

  10. You must have superhuman power to keep posting while so exhausted from medication and heat. I'm so sorry for your loss and am astounded by your strength and commitment to keep blogging. I've been reading your blog for some years now and was also a bit worried when you were out for so long, but thought you might have a problem with your connection. Who could have imagined the story you told us in your last blog? Please make sure you take care of yourself and Joe first and leave the blogging for a better day. (Although of course I'm as desperate as the next person to keep up with all your news). Cynthia

  11. Susan- surely wish we were close enough to be of some help. The head has been terribly draining - DH is on tons of drugs and honestly cannot enjoy the summery part of summer other than the precious hours from just before sunrise to about 9 am.
DO take care - we firmly believe our lives have a Plan with a capital P - yours too and your plan is unfolding - no appetite can result in that 15 lbs. you thought you'd lose t his year!

    Continue to get better!!

  13. our bodies are such miraculous things...it seems they know when we need to rest, re-coup, take it major easy...sometimes better than our minds ever would allow!

    lovin' you!

  14. Cute picture Susan. Glad you are feeling somewhat better.

I know how you are missing Robin, cause I still so badly miss my beloved gelding that I had for 22 years.

  15. I think you should post a picture of your snake bite!

  16. Jeez Louise - oops, I mean Susan - I come back from vacation and find out that your world has tilted on its axis. I would have left a comment on yesterday's post, but by the time I finished reading it I was all shakey over from your experience. I am so very sorry about your dear Robin. I know how it is to lose a dear and beloved pet and my heart goes out to you.
I'll just add my agreement with all the others who have responded here: take it easy, rest, and go with this rather unsettling flow until you are all better in both your body and your heart. The world, the animals, the garden will wait for you.
By the way - How's your Hunky Farm Guy doing? Aside from being bitten by a black widow, I know he must be taking on your work load as well as his own, as well as taking care of you, which we know he's doing most tenderly. Tell him from me, he rocks.

  17. Oh, it never really matters what we have planned. God always has a way of changing them for us. Perhaps this was His way of telling you to slow down, just a bit.

So glad to know you are feeling better. Hang in there!

  18. Jeez Louise - Oops, I mean, Susan -I come back from vacation and find that your world has tilted on its axis big time. I am so sorry for the loss of your dear Robin. I know how it is to loose a beloved pet and my heart goes out to you.
I'll just add my agreement with the others who have commented here: to take it easy, get lots of rest, and go with the rather unsettling flow of this development. It has its purpose. Everything will be there waiting for you when you have recovered.
By the way, how's your Hunky Farm Guy, Joe? Aside from being bitten twice by a black widow, I'm sure he has taken on your work as well as his own, as well as taking care of you, which I am sure he is doing with all tenderness. You tell him from me, he rocks.

  19. You have been through the mill and need a good long rest. Take your pills, lean back and relax. You've had your 3 bad things happen and now everything is going to be better.

  20. I just went and read about your snake bite....OUCH! We don't have snakes here and I can't imagine being bitten by one. Glad you're on the mend. Hopefully you'll be back to your old self soon.

    Warm blessings,
    Spencer

Ps.... I'm so sorry about your pup. They do have our hearts, don't they?

  21. Hi (again) Susan! I love reading the Comments that your readers leave you - obviously, you have many, many people that really care about you and Joe and your wonderful 'fur family'. I think any one of us wish we could come over and help you out in some way or another.

Most important is to take care of yourselves and do whatever you need to heal and rest. We are all out here cheering you (and Joe!) on for a healthy, strong recovery.

  22. I'm so very sorry to hear of all your bad luck and Robin's death. Look after yourself, Joe and your animal family....
    And yes to the book..

  23. I was so SORRY to hear about your snake bite, your husband's black widow bit and the passing of wonderful Robin. I hope next year's birthday will fill you with happiness and chocolate cake to wash away all this year's saddness. Put it all behind you, my dear.
    Your friend,
    Dana

  24. Nothing tops a cat when it comes to yawning and stretching - unless it's perhaps a rabbit!

I'm glad you're resting and healing. Take care.

  25. Oh, it's my favourite internet kitty, Topaz! What a cutie. So sorry to hear of your recent happenings on the farm ... have left a comment on the actual post. Please give Topaz a scratch for me.

  26. Looking forward to seeing the backlog of photos, FG Susan...your pictures are always so well-composed. And if you're too tired to post, we understand. Be good to yourself and rest up; we'll be waiting here when you get back.

I would offer to send you some homemade bread, or Taco Soup, or cookies, or fudge, or even my own version of your Hearty Sausage-Lentil Stew...but it's so &^%$#%# hot that I'm afraid they wouldn't make it, even packed in dry ice and shipped overnight. :-( Anyway, the Happy Kitten Cottage kittehs, chickens, crazy dog, and I send hugs and get-well vibes your way.

December 2015 update: Hi! For some reason I can't figure out, Blogger hasn't been letting me leave comments on my own blog (!) for the last several months, so I've been unable to respond to your comments and questions. My apologies for any inconvenience! You're always welcome to email me: farmgirlfare AT gmail DOT com.

Hi! Thanks for visiting Farmgirl Fare and taking the time to write. While I'm not always able to reply to every comment, I receive and enjoy reading them all.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and I especially love hearing about your experiences with my recipes. Comments on older posts are always welcome!

Please note that I moderate comments, so if I'm away from the computer it may be a while before yours appears.

I try my best to answer all questions, though sometimes it takes me a few days. And sometimes, I'm sorry to say, they fall through the cracks, and for that I sincerely apologize.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy your e-visits to our farm!
