  1. What do you do with 60 eggs a week?!
I can't even keep up with my hens!

  2. I'm laughing too hard at this series of photos. They remind me of when I was a teenager and had girlfriends over. Invariably my dad would poke his head in the room and say, "What are all you hens up to? It sounds like a real hen party in here!"

I hope you don't mind, but I can't resist putting captions to all the pictures. (1)Brown Hen: I spy a bunch of donkeys getting pretty close to the treat bin. (2)White Hen: Whoa, are they allowed to do that? (3)Brown Hen: Hey, hey, quit making so much noise and take a look at that. (4)Brown Hen: OMG, I can't look. (5)Brown Hen: C'mon. Don't give those donkeys the satisfaction of an audience. (6)White Hen: Oh, Gert, you're being a little prudish, aren't you? After all, you're the one who stopped the hen party and made us watch them. (7)White Hen: Whoa, are they allowed to do that? (8)Gert exits, stage left. (9) and (10)Everyone leaves, and Gert follows, averting her eyes. (11)Gert can't help herself and takes one last look. (12)Gert shows the donkeys exactly what she thinks of their behavior.

BTW, can I get some of those eggs in O-ville, MO?

  11. Hi Everybody,
Thanks for all the comments. So glad you enjoyed these photos.

    Carly Mae and JR,
It is a lot of eggs. They just kind of sneaked up on us. Seems our 13 hens are in super laying mode these days.

We do eat quite a few eggs, and we also feed the dogs raw eggs (such a great source of protein). It's also not quite as many as it sounds like because most of them aren't large, so Joe can easily eat five for breakfast.

We haven't had this many eggs in years. About 10 years ago, not long after our 27 hatchery chicks grew up (9 of which turned out to be roosters despite our paying extra for all pullets! LOL), we were getting up to 100 eggs a week. We sold many of them to the natural foods store 35 miles away, but that was sort of a pain, especially considering at the time they were only paying 85 cents a dozen (and selling them for just $1.20 a dozen).

And of course it was only worth it if you were already going in that direction, or the profits didn't even cover the gas. I think they're paying more like $2 a dozen now, so if egg production keeps up like this, it may be something we'll start doing again! :)

    Charade,
Ha, too funny! I especially love #4 (and that was already my favorite picture of the bunch). Thanks for the laugh.

    GZMG,
It won't be long! It's amazing how fast baby chicks grow up.
