I just came here from today's post, and t...Wow. I just came here from today's post, and this is pretty close to my worst nightmare. We've just moved to NC, and I'm now terrified of one of my pets getting bit by a copperhead. I'm slightly less, but still greatly, terrified of getting bit by one myself as well. We lived in Southern Idaho for a few years, but the rattlesnakes rarely came into town, so we just didn't go into the desert. We'd travel up to Central Idaho with the dogs, but snakes were much rarer there, so fewer worries as they played in the Wood River. Here, though, my next door neighbor was telling me that she sees copperheads "all the time" and my three hoodlums are just not savvy about that. I'm glad to hear you made it through, though, especially with a young one- I've read over and over that they're the worst. <br />I cried a bit over Robin, as well. I'm sorry you weren't able to spend that last night with her, and most of all I'm sorry our best buddies have such short time with us. She really is a sweetie, even through her pictures- I can only imagine through your stories how much fun she was in real life!Gescihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09543798912886827648noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12997259.post-87791603329979546582011-01-10T22:53:51.071-06:002011-01-10T22:53:51.071-06:00Oh Susan! Hope your recoveries from assorted nasty bites are going smoothly. And let me express my sadness at the news of Robin's demise. I firmly believe she is trotting down a food-strewn street along with scores of other angelic beagles (including my own departed beagle Penny) happy as can be, smiling for all eternity. Since we moved to the country 17 years ago, meeting our first copperheads coming out from their winter sleep, I've been afraid that myself or one of my 11 children would get bitten. So far, so good. I did some research and bought a snake bite kit in a little yellow box at Walmart ($12). If used shortly after the bite, it can remove up to 60% of the venom. We have used it on insect stings for years and it works very well, so that has given us confidence that if needed for an actual snake bite that it would be helpful. I've actually heard that the mortality rate for black widow bites is 11%, more than copperheads. So sorry about your terrible string of events.Pat or Carrie Hurdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10568519935077231810noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12997259.post-58615355627191964622010-07-25T10:15:21.357-05:002010-07-25T10:15:21.357-05:00Oh,DD, you are SO much braver than I would be!
