Tuesday Farm Photo: Valentine, Farm Style

Hay covered heart in snow - FarmgirlFare.com
Happy Valentine's Day

Need a bigger dose of love? There are all sorts of other found farm hearts here. And you can see some of my ever growing collection of heart shaped rocks here and here. They aren't all perfect, just like love isn't perfect.

I'd forgotten how many stories are woven into some of those heart rock posts—and how incredibly bright green it is here in early spring. This morning I took a quiet trip down memory lane, revisiting everyone from a growing up baby Cary to Rosebud and Snugglebunny (one of my favorite ewes, who sadly died last fall). Saying goodbye to New Cat, and reading through your amazing outpouring of heartfelt comments. When we started losing baby lambs left and right. My dear, sweet brother.

Happiness and sorrow, all wrapped around rocks in the shape of a heart. I have hundreds—both rocks and memories. Cherished, one and all.

Wishing you peace, joy, and love this Valentine's Day—and every day.

, the white (again!) and red foodie farm blog where this heart-shaped balloon—which had me trying to figure out what in the world it was from a hundred feet away—had to have floated through the air for many miles before deciding to plunk itself down in the corner of the barnyard fence sometime during the night. It's the third balloon I've found on the farm, and it's definitely sweeter than the one the goblins left swaying in a post-Halloween breeze.

Not as Long Lasting as a Rock Heart, But I Love
Them Just the Same

© Copyright 2008 FarmgirlFare.com, the award-winning blog where I suppose it's fitting that the first day of winter is our coldest yet, but I still have trouble with forecasts of '1 degree' and 'wind chills as cold as 15 below.' Earlier this evening I changed from my boots into my slippers, which I usually tuck next to the woodstove but had left by the side of the bed this morning in a rush to answer the ringing phone. As one of them made a sort of sucking sound and seemed to be stuck when I picked it up, I thought of the water I'd accidentally spilled from my glass in the wee hours of the morning. My slipper was frozen to the floor. Just don't tell my California foodie mom—she's arriving tomorrow for a holiday visit (packing custom-filled boxes of See's Candy and limes from her tree of course), and I don't know if she can handle that kind of cold. There's nothing like vacationing in an uninsulated Missouri shack.

Farm Photo 2/8/08: Handful Of Heart Rocks

Today's Additions To My Collection

This afternoon I finished up an article about Valentine's Day treats for FoodieView (more about that on Monday when it's published) and headed outside to stretch my legs, enjoy some fresh air, and check on the sheep.

A quick lap around the front field and back up through the creek bed yielded all of these heart shaped rocks (though I realize the one on the right is a bit of a stretch). I figure it must be a sign of some sort. Either that or we just have a whole lot of heart shaped rocks on the farm.

I've Been Adding To My Heart Rock Collection

In A Big Way

At 5-1/2 inches high, this behemoth is now the second biggest heart rock in my collection. (The ladybug that crawled into the photo shoot helps to give you an idea of its size.) I found it while we were out enjoying a walk around a neglected section of our property on Christmas Day. I can't think of a more perfect gift from the farm.

You find several other photos of my collection of found heart rocks
here, along with a few stories that help explain why a bunch of old rocks holds such a special place in my heart. One of the very first photos I posted on Farmgirl Fare back in June 2005 was of my heart rocks. I think it's an interesting sign that since then, nearly 200 more have joined them on the little stone ledge that hangs on the front of The Shack.

Farm Photo 10/2/07: Love On The Rocks

I'm Still Finding Heart Shaped Rocks

Out of curiosity I did a quick count this morning and was surprised to find that my collection now includes well over 150 heart shaped rocks found on and around the farm. It's hard to believe that two and a half years ago I had less than twenty, though I'm not nearly as picky as I used to be.

Most of the hearts aren't perfectly shaped, but then again neither is life. And when grouped together it's obvious that they're all hearts. They range in size from about ten pounds (it marks the cat cemetery in the garden) to barely half an inch across. They're starting to take over the place.

I recently came across this big heart rock in the middle of the fenced pasture across from the barn. It was sitting there on the struggling grass and sheep pellets like a meteorite that had dropped out of the sky.
