Fortunately they decided to climb down and munch on some nice breakfast hay instead.

Fortunately everyone is now safely back where they belong, the two loaves and dozen rolls of Honey Bran Whole Wheat I was in the middle of baking during all of this unexpected excitement didn't overrise, burn, or otherwise become inedible (though I did forget to grease the loaf pans—bummer), and I've now been thoroughly reminded that the big crack in one of my beloved rubber boots is even bigger than it was the last time the creek was up—and I never did get around to buying that replacement pair.

Bird

Dog

For some reason I just thought it looked really neat, and I love that this sight—which never ceases to delight me no matter how many times I see it—is now a part of my life.

Enjoying a Little Quiet Time
© Copyright 2009 FarmgirlFare.com, the foodie farm blog where I guess it's because I spent the first 26 years of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area (and decided to move to Missouri rather than to Maine or Minnesota 14 years ago) that I still feel a sense of wonderment every time we have a snowfall like this. It always feels so peaceful, too. And then the outgoing water pipes freeze (yet again). But at least we still have incoming water—and electricity!

Maybe
There's nothing like an arctic blast to inspire a girl to hunker down and spend countless hours cozied up to her computer working on some blog changes she's been wanting to make for, oh, a couple of years. There are lots of things I still want to add and tweak over the next few weeks (months? decades?) in order to make this site more user friendly and enjoyable to look at, but the biggest challenge—adding the left sidebar—is done.
I'm really excited about the larger photos, especially since I've finally decided to buy a digital SLR camera—something else I've been thinking about doing for a couple of years. And I can hardly wait to unveil the new header illustration being created by the wonderfully talented Liselotte Weller, who designed the current ones after we met back in 2005 during the hilarious Farmgirl Fare Name That Sheep Contest.
But right now the sun is shining and the temperature is back up into the double digits, so enough of this inside stuff. Figuring out html code when you pretty much have no idea what you're doing is an interesting challenge, but I'm starting to go a little stir crazy (and I haven't even touched my kitchen garden blog template yet). I just finished mixing up a batch of Honey Bran Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread dough, so now it's time to head outdoors to catch up on chores, hang a little laundry on the line, hug some neglected sheep, and enjoy the rest of this beautiful day on the farm!

Never Drink Alone on New Year's
And the random winners of the five hardcover copies of Knit Two by Kate Jacobs are:
Angelbis: I learned to knit as an adult and it has now been about 12 years and I'm going strong. I love to knit because I find it hard to do just one thing at a time, so knitting allows me to do something productive with my hands while reading, watching movies, sitting through academic talks or flying. I adore cables! As others have said, knitting is a great way to relax!
Uhmanduh: I love to knit baby things for all my friends havin' babies. ^_^ You can make stuff cuter than can be found in a store, and best of all, you're done in just a few hours. I have yet to attempt a sweater for myself! I always enjoy your farm foodie blog!
Soldierdeb: I have tried to learn several times - But this time I am sticking to it!
Zoomer1: I've just learned to knit in the last year and love it! I'm still very much a beginner, but it's a very relaxing and satisfying way to spend an evening by the fire.
Christine: How awful to have the flu over Christmas. It doesn't seem fair does it? I'm glad you had your mom there (and Joe, of course) to take care of you and I hope by now that you're feeling much better. I used to knit up a storm (and crochet, and do needlework), way back in the day when my kids were little. Until this winter I hadn't picked up a knitting needle in years. Now I'm feeling a bit "full circle-ish" as I've been bringing out my knitting needles and an old how-to book, thinking I just may start again. And what better way to begin again than with your generous giveaway of Knit Two. Happy New Year!
Congratulations! Please e-mail me your shipping address so I can send you your book. My e-mail address is farmgirlfare AT gmail DOT com. And thanks to everybody for entering this fun giveaway. I loved reading about how so many of you are such avid and enthusiastic knitters!

Or maybe she's just posting - it is Cary, after all.
Wondering who Cary is?
You'll find links to her story and more photos of her here.
© 2008 FarmgirlFare.com, the award-winning blog where this copyright notice will no longer contain the phrase 'award-winning' because apparently it's annoying some people — or at least the one person who left a comment complaining about it recently ("can we drop the same opening sentence for every graph — I think its abdundently [sic] clear you have an awrd [sic] winning blog").
So here's the deal. Because unscrupulous people are constantly stealing and republishing the contents of my blog on other websites and claiming it as their own (usually to make money from advertising without having to actually write anything themselves), last year I began adding a copyright notice at the bottom of each blog post to help stop them, and to prove the content is indeed mine. Using the same wording every time makes it easier for me to track things using google alerts.
But after a while I got bored typing the same notice over and over, so for kicks I started changing it. Some of you realized this right away and let me know you enjoyed the little bits of farm news I'd share — kind of like my own personal Twitter. I simply kept the first line the same, and it never crossed my mind that this meant I was bombarding you with the fact that Farmgirl Fare has won some awards — probably because I was too busy coming up with something new and amusing to say.
Or, as my ever-so-subtle best pal and staunch supporter Beth put it, "It's a *bleeping* copyright notice that is original every day! Shut the *bleep* up if you don't like the lede - or start reading on the second line."
But just in case it's been bothering you, too (after that comment I started wondering if it had been getting on everybody's nerves), I'm going to stop saying 'award-winning.' It's no big deal to me, but I did want to explain it all to you. And this just might be the longest copyright notice ever written.

© Copyright 2008 FarmgirlFare.com, the award-winng blog where we always enjoy the morning mist (especially in summer since the moisture saves the fields when the rainstorms continually go around us), but the photos are deceiving — everything looks so crisp and cool, but actually it's hot and muggy. It is, however, as quiet as it looks. Unless Cary is complaining about something. Or the rooster is crowing ('cause they don't just do it at dawn). Or Bear and Robin are barking. Or one of the hens is laying an egg. Or, god forbid, Donkey Doodle Dandy is upset. Okay, so maybe it's not so quiet around here after all. But at least this is the kind of noise we don't mind hearing!
