We're getting closer, though; today he kept creeping toward me as his curiosity got the best of him while watching Evie and Esmeralda practically crush me (in a good way) with hugs and affection. I'm determined to win him over soon. In the meantime, isn't the word longears the best? I'd never heard it until a year or two ago, but I immediately fell in love with it. It's even the name of the American Donkey and Mule Society's website.

Tuesday Dose of Cute: Baby Turtle Blogging

Okay, inspection's over. You can go back to the garden now.

We have something like 16 different kinds of turtles and tortoises here in Missouri, and as long as they're not anywhere near my strawberry bed (turtles LOVE strawberries), I really enjoy finding them around the farm.

Whenever I take the time to inspect these little prehistoric creatures, the more I realize just how truly fascinating they are.

Want to see and read more about our turtles (and their passion for my strawberries)?

6/23/07: Looking for My Strawberries?

© FarmgirlFare.com, the hard shelled foodie farm blog where I found this cute little critter hiding in a weedy kitchen garden bed back in early July (and then promptly forgot about these photos).

I probably should have relocated it far away from my strawberry plants, but since this year's berry harvest was already over, and next year's is many months away (too bad, as all this strawberry talk now has me desperately craving a big bowl of this—though if you grow strawberries, the time to ensure bigger berries next spring is now, and here's how) I decided to let it stay in the garden.

I'll no doubt be sorry next spring. And yes, I washed my hands really well after touching this turtle.

And he was right—if she isn't on me (she's sitting on my lap as I type this) then she's always close by. This explains a lot, since she even scampers alongside me when I get up to pee in the night. I've never had another cat like her, and I'm sure I never will—and I can't believe it's been over a year and a half since I've posted a picture of her!

Wednesday Dose of Cute: Smile for the Camera

Or Not (Little ewe lamb on 5/6/09, last seen on May Day)

Baby animal lovers—don't panic! I didn't mean to alarm some of you when I jokingly said in yesterday's White Bean & Artichoke Dip Recipe post, Enough with the all the cute animal pictures. Not to worry, the (almost) Daily Doses of Cute are alive and well!

I mentioned that I was only kidding in the ever-changing copyright notice at the very bottom of the post (I realize many of you like the animal photos best), but I guess some of you missed it. You do read those little copyright notices down there, don't you? That's where all the newsy stuff is—kind of like my own personal non-twitter twitter stream.

Hopefully that sweet thing hasn't spent 15 months living at a shelter like Topaz did—and has already found a loving new home.

Do you have room for a four-footed family member? Please consider adopting a shelter or rescue animal—perhaps from my amazing friend Bernie Berlin's A Place To Bark. But hopefully the big chain (which you can't see) that has been helping to hold it up for the past couple of years will keep it standing until next spring when all the hay will have been fed out and we can tear it down and finally rebuild it. Until then, it gives the place plenty of character—as if we were lacking in that department.

Saturday Dose of Cute: Weekend Plan

Keep cool. . .

And close to mom.

As for my own weekend plan, I haven't had a chance to chill out in my cool new retro chair yet, but I figure I still have a day and a half to fit in some serious shade time. The dishes are mostly done (how in the world can two people create thousands of dirty dishes?), the drooping kitchen garden has been watered (and even a little weeded!), and I think everyone's bellies are full—at least for now.

It's time to turn on the oven and bake up a big batch of chocolate chip cookies before roasting tonight's chicken—or else curl up and take a nap.

I hope you're having a relaxing weekend!

Saturday Extreme Dose of Cute: New Baby Donkey Alert!!

Say Hello to Daphne's Brand New Baby Boy

Talk about cute overload. Is this little guy adorable or what? I'll have more photos of him up hopefully soon—I'm headed back out to see them now. In the meantime, baby and mama Daphne are both doing fine, big sister Evie (who just had her first birthday two weeks ago) is demanding lots of extra hugs and pets, a very proud Donkey Doodle Daddy passed out congratulatory organic carrots to everyone, and I tucked a celebratory bottle of champagne in the fridge.

Whiskers appears to love his new farm cat life almost as much as we love him.
