© FarmgirlFare.com, the empty nest foodie farm blog where I'm thrilled to have found three new nests (all unable to be reused by birds again) in the last five days, including one that literally flew onto me as I pulled a bale of hay down from the open-sided barn—and the one pictured here appears to have some dog or donkey hairs carefully woven into it. My most prized bird nest contains a strand of my long hair.

  1. Very nice. I collect bird nests too. They are little works of art! I also like wasp nests.

  2. Birds' nests are amazing aren't they? Such strength in something so fragile appearing. The nests around our place have goat hairs woven in - nice and warm and soft for the hatchlings.

  3. i love it! when i was a child, i used to collect bird nests (along with various and sundry other things like little animal skeletons, bird egg shells, rocks, etc...my poor mother!!) some of my fondest memories with my grandpa were collecting (no longer used) bird nests which he had found in the trees on his property. the very best and most wonderful one was one made by a Baltimore oriole...it was a beautiful silver grey hanging sack. it was my treasure!!

so happy for your little Christmas nest gifts!!

  5. Last year I uncovered a bird's nest with eggs in it on the ground when I was clearing out the blackberry brambles (and may I just say about that: OW). I covered it back up again with some branches, but the next day, all the eggs were gone. I felt really bad about that. It's hard to be a gardener and have a sensitive conscience.

  6. I love birdnests! The kids laugh at me because at the top of our Christmas tree is a "fake" nest w/ a cardinal in it...LOL In the spring I take our golden out and brush him and watch as the birds gather up his fur for their nests... TFS and a great collection...

  7. Oh, I love nests...I never seem to find any here in urban San Diego, though. I bought one in Tennessee a few years ago from a sweet elderly man who said, "That bird sure did a dang good job, didn't it?" I have 3 bird's nests (that real one and 2 "fake" ones) in my Christmas tree right now...if I COULD find them, I would collect them too! (I also have a heart-shaped rock collection going back many years...and shells and feathers and well, you know!) Love and light in the new year...

  8. I am in total awe of birds nest, although I never find them either. I'm also amazed at wasp nests - I just can't figure out how they do that!! Mother Nature is truly magical.

Where do you keep your bird nest treasures? Somewhere in your house?

Again, thank you for sharing your wonderful, crazy life with the rest of us! Happy Christmas to all of you!

  9. Hi Susan,

After a tornado a few years ago, I found a tiny hummingbird nest on my deck. The inside was soft because it was lined with long orange cat hair, from my cat, Milo.

The nest is still intact and on display in my living room, along with my collection of hatched robin eggs.

My brother is the animal skull collector of the family. His living room has a decidedly different feel than mine.
