Thursday Dose of Cute: So We Got Some More Snow

Tana is Thrilled

More snow photos coming soon. Need a bigger blizzard right now? You'll find links to lots more snowstorms here (scroll down past the playful pups). I've also just added the cute half to Tuesday's heart rock post, which was the whole reason for it in the first place, yet I somehow completely spaced it out until that crazy Sylvester kept walking into more photos this afternoon. And here I was hoping to be more organized and on top of things this year!

© Copyright 2010 FarmgirlFare.com, the three inches of snow covered foodie farm blog (which makes that white Christmas already seem like nothing) where the sheep have so much wool (or hair) to keep them warm in winter that they often choose to sleep outside during snowstorms, but you just get the sense that for some of them, this is definitely not their favorite time of year.

Farm Photo 10/11/07: Living By The Light

Tana Enjoys The Breakfast Buffet

My life in the city was ruled by the clock. Now it's ruled by the sun. Animals don't wear watches, and they don't stick to fixed timetables. The system they live by is simple: when it's light you wake up, when it's dark you go to sleep. In between you eat as much as you possibly can. Their lifestyle, in turn, determines ours, because it would probably be easier to knock the earth off its axis than convince a flock of sheep in July that it's time to go to bed at six o'clock. I spend my days acutely aware of sunrises and sunsets.

The other thing I now pay attention to is where the sun is actually shining during the different seasons. Sometimes this is for practical reasons; it's handy, for instance, to know when the laundry line is going to be in the sun or when the greenhouse will be in the shade.

Other times I'm reminded of the constantly changing angles of the sun when I come upon a scene like the one in the photo above. There are only a few misty mornings each fall when the light hits this tree in such a way that the big branch on the right appears to extend down to the ground. I captured it last year, then forgot all about it until the other day when it started happening again.

I love these comforting little reminders of how some things really do stay exactly the same from one year to the next.

Tana & Her Baby Boy On Their First Morning Outside

This was taken a couple of days ago. Joe, who just got back from a quickie barn check because "One of the miniature ones wouldn't stop crying," (it stopped as soon as he walked all the way down there) has informed me that "Tana's lamb has got things figured out. He said, 'I'm black, and I get hot in the sun,' so now he lays under the bunk feeder in the shade while Tana eats around him." That is, when he's not racing around the farmyard looking for trouble with his little woolly compatriots. . .

New lamb alert!
Yesterday morning second-time mother Bruisie gave birth to a huge baby boy. When Joe first saw him, his jaw dropped anad he stared at him in disbelief. "He looks like he's two weeks old!" His enormous size wasn't that surprising to me, though. After all, Bruisie got her name (which is officially Bruiser) because when she was born she was so much bigger than all the other lambs.

Speaking of other lambs, it looks like more will be arriving soon, including at least a couple more sets of twins. Annette is so big she now swaggers. Snugglebunny, on the other hand, does more of a waddle. They both look hysterical, but I try my best not to laugh in their faces. Extremely pregnant girls can be very sensitive.
