Tuesday Farm Photo: Goodbye to a Good Ewe

Martha and her twins in the front field on May 5th, 2006

When I moved in with my hunky farmguy Joe 11 years ago, I brought 14 sheep (and a bunch of other critters) with me from my old farm. Martha, who died today, was the last surviving ewe.

She was 14 years old, which, as Joe reminded me, "is probably longer than sheep are supposed to live." (My 15-year-old pet wether Big Chip, the last of the original 14, is still miraculously with us, and still loves to give hugs. His brother, Skinny Chip, died last year. I called them The Chippers.)

Martha, who was sometimes known as the World's Best Pillow, had about the best life a sheep could ask for, though I'm sure she would have liked a few thousand more pounds of grain. A couple of months ago Joe started referring to her as Every Sheep because she demanded a treat whenever any other sheep was being fed—and she could hear the rustle of a grain bucket from half a mile away.

She was the loudest sheep I've ever known—which is saying something—and she was never one to keep her opinions to herself. Basically she never shut up. But in a good way. Mostly.

Thursday Dose of Cute: Roadblock

Wooly Roadblock
Protesting Something?

There's nothing like a ewe with an attitude. At 13½, Martha is the last of my old girls. Long since retired from breeding, she now spends her time complaining loudly over the slightest injustice, leading the rest of the flock through the woods and around fences in order to get closer to any feed buckets she might hear rustling, and sitting down wherever the heck she wants.

Contrary to what Martha may claim about being chronically treat deprived (despite getting to eat with the pregnant ewes all winter because she's old and I'm a sucker), I think she's led a pretty good life.

© Copyright 2009 FarmgirlFare.com, the twins are twice as nice foodie farm blog where yep, this red wall is part of the old sheep barn. And yep, we've had a whole new Amish- and Joe-built sheep barn in its place for several months now. And yep, I still haven't posted any photos of the fabulous new structure. And nope, I have no idea what my problem is, except that I wanted to do a day-to-day series of photos so those of you who are interested could see the whole building process, and other stuff keeps getting prioritized ahead of that semi massive project—and I'm perpetually behind with pretty much everything. Thank goodness the actual construction didn't take anywhere near this long!

It's A Boy! It's A Girl! It's A Boy!

It's A Crazy Day On The Farm!

Just before dawn, my beloved (and wiped out) Doll Face had this sweet baby boy out in the 10 degree cold. Here they are snuggled up under the heat lamp in their bonding pen (hence the odd lighting in the photos).

I Love You, Mama

Meanwhile. . . You all remember
Martha, don't you?

Well, this picture was taken this morning, and she would like you all to know that it's not fat (or fluff). . .

It's Twins!

I've been watching her for weeks, even bundling up and clomping down to the barn around 2am for the past ten nights to check on everyone--but especially her. This afternoon I had to make a mad dash to town (I haven't left the farm in a week), and I was sure Martha would choose that time to go into labor.
I ignored half my To Do List and was gone barely over two hours. I sped down the driveway, screeched to a halt in front of the barnyard, and saw Martha cleaning up a lamb that was just a few minutes old. By the time I had zipped up to the house, changed my clothes, and scampered back down to the barn, the second lamb was on its way out. All three are now happily snuggled up in their bonding pen next door to Doll Face and her baby.

I think that's just about enough excitement for the day. Of course, I'll be heading back down to the barn in a few hours, and Mary and Frederica were looking awfully close. . .
