On Guard
Want to get to know our big dogs better? You'll find lots more Daisy photos here and Marta photos here. A pileup of 2010 snow photos is here.
© 2010 FarmgirlFare.com, the well patrolled foodie farm blog where there's nothing better than a big white livestock guard dog, except two big white livestock guard dogs—or one big white one and one sorta white one. Her full name is Marta Beast, her latest nickname is Marta the Mess, and as soon as the weather warms up she's getting sheared. Unfortunately our sheep shearer says he doesn't do dogs. In the meantime, my hunky farmguy Joe likes to point out the bright side: "If you were a coyote, wouldn't you be terrified of her?" Definitely.
The giant pups look loving and protective. Don't you wish people possessed that kind of devotion?

Ohhhhh! go girls make us err your mom proud :) Nice photos, they are sweeties for sure. Is Marta getting the GI Jane cut?
ReplyDeleteHey what was that yummy looking fritatta type dish? You drizzled the dressing over in the post about home made dressing.
If you don't want your dog "show-dog gorgeous", it's easy to shear a dog. Just pick yourself up some clippers and go to it! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe sheep on your site are HILARIOUS. They look shell-shocked - as in "How did we get on this here blog?"
ReplyDeleteYour Daisy looks so much like our Bentley and Mishka. They are Maremmas (Italian Sheepdogs). Such lovely, protective and watchful personalities. Yours both look so sweet.
ReplyDeleteSusan, We have our Bear out here protecting all from coyotes. I got the idea of taking his shed undercoat to a woman who spins wool, and she cleaned it, carded it, and spun it. Now I have several skeins of beautiful off white dog "wool" that has made a couple of beautiful scarves :).
ReplyDeleteThat is the sweetest picture - what great dogs they are!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing them with us.
I just came across your blog. Can't wait to try the recipe you have for the bean artichoke dip. Did you make your own blog header? I love it, so cute!!

If they were pristine they would be house dogs, not guard dogs. And you know that they wouldn't be as happy if they couldn't be outside with the sheep. Go gentle on the hair cuts.
