Current chick count: 15. Number of mama hens: 3. Number of chicks Lokey has: 11. Number of eggs we're getting from our 13 laying hens: 2 to 4 dozen per week (we go through a lot of eggs). Number of these chicks we're hoping will turn out to be roosters: 0! (because two roosters that crow around the clock are plenty).

  1. Very cute chicks! I was on a bicycle tour of Vietnam in February and photographed a mother hen with TWENTY baby chicks! Lots were crawling onto her back, just like yours. I wondered what the normal number of chicks was, and whether she might be a foster hen to others' chicks?

  4. So cute! I'm wondering if you ever have had problems integrating the baby chicks with the other chickens. We have chicks that are about 2 months old, and I just got a couple more to add color to my flock. So far I've kept them seperate, but when I did put them together for a bit to see how they'd do, one of the older ones started pecking at the baby chicks legs.

  5. Adorable! My son and I giggled over the cuteness. We can't wait until our chickens have babies of their own. What fun!

  6. My husband thanks the heavens everyday that we didn't move from the town we are currently living in because we are NOT permitted to have chickens. I keep telling him that if the ban is ever lifted I have the perfect spot for the hen house :) Love the pics - thanks for sharing.

  9. Oh man! I just want to smush my face into a giant armload of those chicks!

Which, now that I read that sounds sort of bad.

    You know what I mean.
