Thursday Farm Photo: Misty Morning Light

Shining on a Brand New Day (& Silly & her Darling Daughter) — Stop and Breathe It In

It's beautiful outside! I'm finishing up a long farm story post that will hopefully be posted tonight, but in the meantime I thought I'd share a glimpse of our morning in case you could use some peaceful scenery.

I've been out checking on the critters, soaking up the sun, surveying the grass situation in the front field (not bad for this time of year, though nothing like it was in June of course), unloading the several hundred pounds of sheep and donkey treats I picked up yesterday in town, watching a high-flying gaggle of geese heading south for the winter (one of the neatest things about living here), and even doing little impromptu donkey manure spreading in the kitchen garden. (And you thought we just kept the donkeys around for their entertainment value.)

I don't know about you, but this kind of light always feels rejuvenating to me. It's so invigorating and full of hope—like anything you might possibly dream up can happen.

It's more like whenever he feels like it, which around here is all day, all night, and any moment in between. One time we were off the farm and didn't get back until 1 a.m., and as soon as we opened the truck doors we heard COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO! I burst out laughing. We were definitely home sweet home!

It is, however, as quiet as it looks. Unless Cary is complaining about something. Or the rooster is crowing ('cause they don't just do it at dawn). Or Bear and Robin are barking. Or one of the hens is laying an egg. Or, god forbid, Donkey Doodle Dandy is upset. Okay, so maybe it's not so quiet around here after all. But at least this is the kind of noise we don't mind hearing!

Farm Photo 12/13/07: Slow Traffic Ahead

As Seen Through My Windshield

When a discount chain builds a megastore out here, they put in new stoplights and create special turn lanes. When an Amish community moved to the area last spring, yellow traffic signs popped up along the highway sporting pictures of horse-drawn buggies and asking us to Share The Road. I gladly do.

As for taking this picture, don't worry--there were no other cars around and I'd slowed down to one horsepower speed.

Morning Mist Rising Off The Wet Weather Creek

Lamb Report: So we're still playing Non-Stop Classic Rock in the barn to help scare off the coyotes (can't get any other stations to come in). Last night while I was down there for a final check before bed, Alice Cooper announced that "if you don't have anything better to do, you can email me." I was this close to letting him know that he has a wider audience than probably even he could imagine. Of course, his barnyard listeners aren't exactly tuning into his show by choice (well, at least one is). Who knows. Maybe I'll email him tonight--if I don't have anything better to do. Current Lamb Count: 22. Number of times I counted lambs yesterday evening before I came up with the correct number: Felt like 90. (This is more difficult to do than it sounds.)

Donkey Report: Trimmed hooves look spiffy, and I'm back to being loved about 90%--won't let me touch his ears yet. (Which, by the way, the farrier announced were quite small for a donkey. Maybe that's what makes Dan so much cuter than the average donkey).
