Thursday Farm Photo:
Even Prettier than John Deere Green

Ribbit

© Copyright 2008 FarmgirlFare.com, the award-winning blog where some of you serious frog fans may recognize this little cutie (maybe this photo actually does qualify as a Daily Dose of Cute?) as the one who was hanging out poolside back in May. We weren't trying to pull a froggy fast one on you here — simply came across it while sorting through old photos and fell in love all over again. That gorgeous coloring! Meanwhile the spring is teeming with frogs who all leap into the water when you walk over and dunk in the big empty beer bottle you use to prime the pump that fills up the water tank on the back of the truck, and all you can hear for a couple of seconds is a hysterical sounding chorus of "Eeek! Eeek! Splash! Eeek! Eeek! Splash!"

  1. The vision I have of the frogs in the spring cracked me up. You are funny!

  2. Hi FJ,
The frogs crack me up, too. The little squeals they let out as they flee into the water are hilarious. One of the best things about living on the farm is that fact is better than fiction. You can't make this stuff up - and you don't have to! : )

  3. I definitely think he qualifies as a daily dose of cute. I bet my Mr. Farmer Dog-Geek would still prefer John Deere Green, though.

  4. As always - I LOVE the frogs. We had one so big by our pool the other day that I couldn't decide if it was a bunch of leaves or a frog. My daughter went to see and before she could get up to it, it leapt higher than she is tall and was was gone in two bounds. We all got a great laugh. I can't wait for him to come back so I can set some shots of him.

  7. Textural indeed - brightly green and quirky - frogs are good - it isn't easy being green you know - I heard that on good authority (thanks Kermit). You must have spooked your frogs to make them squeal when you approach! maybe you should find a frog whisperer?!

  9. Your blog is beautiful and interesting, and deserves to be an award winner. That said , do you have your wholesale bakery up and running. I am in Warsaw Missouri we have a rug hooking store, might have an interest in your bread since we might be putting in a tea room.
    thanks Katie Paxton

  10. Great photo of the frog. I never thought of a john Deere and a Frog. Interesting.

Keep Blogging - I enjoy your work.

  11. Your frogs not only squeeeek, but have warts! Astonishing! Our frogs are quietly demure Northeasterners, who would, (obviously) be mortified to be warty. Hugely enjoyed your froggie tale!

  12. Hello Frog Fans!
So glad you like the photo.

    Hi Dog Geek,
Yeah, there aren't many of us who would take a toad over a tractor. Actually, 'take' isn't a good word - because if there was a choice, I would definitely take the tractor! ; )

    Hi Anne,
OMG that frog sounds huge! How neat.

    Hi ML,
They do make a wonderful racket, don't they? I just love it, too. : )

    Hi Nancy,
According to this fun site I found a few months ago when doing a search for 'the difference between frogs and toads' (what did we used to do without google?), this definitely appears to be a toad. They also say that most people are surprised to hear that all Toads actually are Frogs!

    Hi LS,
Yeah, I definitely spooked them, because today I was over at the spring and while I heard them all ker-plunking into the water (and actually saw several of them trying to decide whether to make the leap or not), I didn't hear a single Eeek! I was wondering if it was because when I'm over there filling up that water bottle to prime the pump (which I wasn't doing today), I look as if I'm about to jump into the spring. : )

    Hi Vickie,
So nice to hear from you! Yep, definitely cute.

    Hi SCMOM,
    Thanks!

    Hi Katie,
Thanks so much for your interest in our bread and bread bakery. A tea room in your shop sounds great. Our bakery building is is still under construction (the light blue floor tiles were put in last month and look great!), but unfortunately due to the skyrocketing cost of flour and gas (and just about everything else) the bread baking operation itself has been put on indefinite hold. But seeing as how we already have a 60-quart mixer and a 7-foot wide deck oven, hopefully there will be some large scale baking of some sort in our future! : )

    Hi Bren,
They really don't have anything to do with each other - it was just my mind having fun. Farmers (myself included) are always talking and joking about 'John Deere green,' which is the color of all John Deere tractors and equipment (except the huge commercial stuff which is a boring brownish color). John Deere makes excellent machinery (our very old hay baler is actually John Deere that Joe bought years ago at a farm auction) but it's very pricey stuff. So the joke is that you pay a lot for that green paint. ; )

  14. You take such great photos. I'm looking into getting a new camera. What type of camera do you use?

  15. I love the frog photo! When I was a kid I spent very summer catching and keeping frogs and toads.
    I miss them.
Thanks for the pic. It's so cute!
