Pick a bale of hay

Halfway to our goal! In eight days and three cuttings, we put up 445 bales of hay, which might be a record for us. We stacked the last trailer load of bales in the hay barn Thursday night and are now taking a few days off from the hayfield (it's Sheep Working Weekend again!) before we start on the second 445 bales—or as close to that as we can hopefully get. There are so many uncontrollable factors working against you when putting up hay.

They've put a slight chance of rain in the forecast starting last night and continuing through the weekend, which is just what the freshly cut section of the hayfield, the uncut section of the hayfield that has already started burning up from the relentless sunny days in the 90s (which we finally had a break from today), and the rest of this dusty farm needs.

I was thrilled to be startled awake a little after midnight last night by the sounds of crashing thunder and a barrage of raindrops battering down on The Shack's leaky old tin roof—even though there was still laundry out on the line, the windows were left down on all three vehicles (something we never do), and it was raining in the kitchen. Hey, whatever it takes to make it rain.

We only ended up getting a quarter inch, but it was a lot better than nothing, especially this time of year. You'd never guess it was flooding  here seven weeks ago.

©, where we haven't been blessed with any fresh berries yet this year, so I haven't been baking this Easy Orange Yogurt Loaf Cake that I love, and that goes so well with fresh strawberries and blueberries. Hooves are crossed that this might finally be the summer the wild blackberries put out, and I can bake myself a July birthday pie. In the meantime, I have a can of organic pumpkin and a hankering for some Pumpkin Spice Cake with Orange Cream Cheese Frosting. Is pumpkin cake too weird for a hot time in June?

  3. Pumpkin cake sounds good to me. When will it be out of the oven? My fork is ready.

    Congratulations on reaching the 1/2 way mark of haying. May the rains be timed well and you get the rest of the hay fields harvested in a timely fashion.

  6. I made the Pumpkin Spice Cake with recommended coordinating frosting as a layer cake for my son's first birthday. It was terrific. And thanks for the heads-up on the very inexpensive organic canned pumpkin. For years I've had a hard time finding any canned pumpkin except around Thanksgiving, never mind that cheap and organic to boot! And shipped free!

  9. Bert is so cute. He really enjoys himself on the farm. It is so hot and dry here in the Houston area. Watering the yard and plants every day. Not fun!! I bet you were glad to get at least some rain. It helps, if even a little.
