Sometimes Known As Hayhead
This is an actual conversation that took place last November.
My mother: What's that one's name?
Me: Auntie Rose.
My mother: That's kind of a dumb name.
My head turns, my eyes widen in disbelief.
Me: You named her!
My mother: I did?
Me: Yes!
My mother: I don't remember.
Me: It was years ago. For some reason we'd started calling one of The Chippers Uncle Chip, and you said there should be an Auntie Rose to go with Uncle Chip and we needed to name this ewe Auntie Rose.
My mother: I did?
Me: Yes!
My mother: I don't remember that.
Me: I always wanted to change her name to something else, but I was afraid I'd hurt your feelings.
My mother: I really don't remember.
Me: So you mean to tell me that all these years she could have had a better name instead of being called Auntie Rose?
My mother: I don't remember any of this.
Maybe my mother should enter politics.

What's wrong with Auntie Rose? I like the name. : ) It sounds sweet.
ReplyDeleteI kept thinking of a very old and bad joke which I will not repeat here - but it was about a singing telegram and Sister Rose. Anyhooo - we have often allowed friends, kids of friends and assorted others to name our goats - ergo - a favorite doe named Norman, a goat named Hannah has a female kid named Montana (ala Mylie Cyrus) - but I love your mother - complete denial and disremembering (that was the line used in congressional hearings - I disremember that - DUH?)
ReplyDeleteLove the picture! Hayhead works for me. :)
ReplyDeleteWhy not reame the sheep after your Mom!
ReplyDeleteIt will be easy for everyone to remember?
very funny :)
ReplyDeleteAuntie Rose is a cute name though
Hi Farmgirl Fare. I just recently stumbled upon your blog and just had to add it to my favorites - I love farm life and love all your pictures. A local farmer, who lives on the way to my inlaws, gets about 100 lambs in each spring and the little white puffs scatter all over the hillside and I just love seeing them everyday. Something about it brings me joy. They just came yesterday so you're picture of "Auntie Rose" was very appropriate for me! And by the way, I like the name Auntie Rose - I actually have an Aunt Rose - literally.
ReplyDeleteOk, please forgive me, for I have never lived on a farm. My question is how hard is it for you to not only care for and love these animals as you do, but name them as well and then turn around and eat them for dinner? I think I would have a hard time with that.
ReplyDeleteI love all the pictures on your site. I also love your style of writing.
Amanda
Another thing I find amazing is that you can tell all the sheep apart. Aren't a lot of them like twins? Do they wear different color ankle bracelets?
ReplyDeleteLoved the story. It is funny that your mom now thinks that Auntie Rose is a dumb name (but I sympathize with her forgetfulness).
My mom's name was Rose and while she was quite a character, I do dearly love the name. It's popping up all over our family (southern folks). We have Savanna Rose and many other variations. Our youngest daughter is expecting her first baby who will be a "Rose" for the middle name.
ReplyDeleteAunt Rose could have done worse. This "is" the south. LOL!!!

If I owned a ewe - and I'd like to - I'd end up having this exact same conversation with my mother, except that she'd want me to name her Amanda.
ReplyDeleteShe's bitter because she has no grandchildren named Amanda...five years from now she'd be upset about a different name and wonder why I've named a sheep Amanda when I COULD have called her fill-in-the-blank....
Amazing, aren't they? How do mothers actually get along in the world? I'm convinced estrogen depletion leads to insanity....
I just wanted to add my kudos for your wonderful blog. I'm really enjoying it. We have Romneys with names like Desdemona, Hermione, Myrtle, and Butthead (he was a not-very-nice ram).
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
I adore my mom, but she has the most convenient memory of anyone I've ever met. Yours, too, apparently.
ReplyDeleteAuntie Rose is adorable.
Your mom stories crack me up! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteOh, Susan, your stories are SO DARNED FUNNY. I belly laughed on this one. I love your blog - have been reading for about 2 years. Your writing is so very clever, and I feel like I know you enough that we'd be friends if I lived down the lane. Thanks so much for all the enjoyment I get from your posts.
ReplyDeleteI not only do not remember naming Auntie Rose, I DON'T REMEMBER the described conversation!
ReplyDeleteI just got home from 4 days in Yosemite and reading this at midnight and laughing out loud is close to the highlight of the 4 days!
Looking forward to my upcoming visit in April which should provide you with some more "interesting fodder" for your blog!
Love, Mum
HA! I've had a hundred conversations with my mom that go much like this.
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad that we've learned to laugh about it instead of taking it as a queue that we should, say, drink less or something crazy.
That is a great story! I have many conversations like that with my husband.
ReplyDeleteThat is too funny! Thanks for the smile.
ReplyDeleteLOL! My mother says she doesn't mind watching a movie a second time because she never remembers the ending from the first time she watched it.
ReplyDeleteYour mother and my mother should get together and have lunch or something. Of course, neither of them would remember it.
