Saturday Farm Photos: These Blustery, Mustery Days

Beacon Blankets 1
Are Perfect for Blow Drying

Before I got into vintage quilts, I collected old Beacon style blankets, and for years I kept them safely tucked away in storage boxes. Not anymore. Life's too short to keep the stuff you love the most packed away where you can't enjoy it, especially when it's something as useful as a blanket.

Wednesday Farm Photos: Vintage Quilt Love (Again)

Quilt 1

We haven't been out cutting firewood yet this fall (we've been busy catching up with other stuff, like cutting 310 more bales of hay), but there's no chance we're going to freeze. I have an ever growing stack of cozy vintage quilts to keep us warm.

© FarmgirlFare.com, the fresh and clean foodie farm blog where if you've ever looked at paint color chips, you know that there are approximately 43,000 versions of white available. Around here, we tend toward one called Not Quite White. There's nothing like a few hours hanging on the line in the bright sun to bleach out lingering spots on laundry, but there's also nothing like dirty farm duds.

Washing our clothes is not just a chore, it's a challenge, and thankfully one I don't mind doing, although sometimes—usually after a six load marathon session that hasn't made much of a dent—I wonder how it is physically possible for two people who aren't into fashion and 100+ critters who run around naked to create this much dirty laundry all the time. Because our old dryer is down to only one heat setting—flame—when the weather is bad, the laundry really starts to pile up. Once it is washed, we judge it by what Joe refers to as the sniff test—it may not look clean, but it always smells clean. And fortunately the animals don't seem to mind the spots.

Monday Farm Photos: Two More Vintage Quilts!

So many tiny pieces of fabric.

A funny thing happened when I went back to the junk market last week to pick up the rest of my vintage haul from a recent bargain buying spree. . .

Wednesday Farm Photos: A New Old Quilt and a New Old Buying Habit

1 New Old Quilt
Lightweight and Lovely to Look At

While Marta Beast was at the dog spa last week (amusing before and after pictures coming soon), I headed over to my favorite junk mall to hunt away the hours. I managed to find all sorts of vintage treasures, including a few pieces of furniture for the new house (which Joe swears we're moving into next fall): two funky, yet surprisingly comfortable old chairs I couldn't resist for $3 apiece; an industrial looking, square metal cabinet with an indestructible formica-type worktop that I know will come in really handy somewhere; a darling little dark wood table with four tiny drawers that might become a nightstand; a rustic wooden footstool that makes me think of those stately old summer camps in the Adirondacks; and a cheerful painted yellow dresser that has glass knobs, a stylish curve to the drawer fronts, and isn't as big as I would have liked but couldn't be passed up for 30 bucks.

Monday Daily Dose of Cute: Stand By Your Lamb

Lucky Buddy Bear and his extended flock

Farm Photo 1/12/08: Winter Wash & Dry

You've Heard Of Slow Food? This Is Slow Dry

I love my clothesline and use it all year round. There's nothing like the smell of sheets and towels that have been air-dried on a fresh breeze. Because I'm a certified shrinkmaster, even in winter I shy away from our dryer. (Okay, okay, the crazy thing terrifies me, especially now that it seems to have only one temperature: Flame. Thank god the air-only setting still works so I can fluff up bath sheets without too much fear of turning them into washcloths.)

January weather in Missouri isn't real conducive to line drying, though, so the dirty laundry has really started piling up. You know it's bad when you can do an entire load of only reds and pinks--and it's a king size load. I'm just grateful the sheep don't wear clothes.

Click here to see the R-rated version of today's photo.

Monday Farm Photo: Sunshine and Laundry on the Line

It's Monday Washday!

Lamb Report:
As soon as it was dark last night, a pack of coyotes out near the hayfield burst into song. If these creatures didn't pose such a threat to my sheep, I do believe I would find their nighttime serenades rather pleasant. As it was, though, the dogs went crazy barking at them, and I, well, I did what one can do when they are miles from anywhere and anyone--I raised my head up high, took a deep breath, and let out a long, loud howl. That shut them up.

But as I mentioned previously, coyotes aren't the only danger lurking in the darkness. I thought the all night barkathon was for the coyotes' benefit, but this morning I found a murdered armadillo just a few feet from the barnyard—and one bad ass beagle covered with dried blood.

Current Lamb Count: 16. Known Dog Victories Over Menacing Predators: 1. And no, I don't think the armadillo got the lambs, but they're destructive, awful creatures, especially in the garden. Plus the dogs despise them.
