© Copyright 2008 FarmgirlFare.com, the award-winning blog where we've past our official October 15th frost date without any frost, though we often get frost even earlier since we're tucked down in this little valley. Colder weather is headed our way, and while the majority of our green tomatoes are already safely in the pantry (some will turn red on their own and the rest are headed for a batch of my salsa-like green tomato relish), we couldn't help trying for a few more vine-ripened red—and orange!—ones (the ones ripened off the vine won't have anywhere near as much flavor). Thanks to floating row covers and old bedsheets we toss over the plants at night, we're still enjoying a few more—and oh how we're savoring each one. Update: Okay, so between the time I wrote this last night and woke up this morning, the farm has been completely covered with frost. Tonight we'll have the last BLTs of the season for dinner (made with bacon from the locally raised hog we had butchered this summer and served on toasted homemade bread) while the woodstove keeps us toasty warm. What a delicious contradiction!

  1. Your pic of the bowl of tomatoes alomst, kind of, gives me nightmares! I had a glut of them and being it was my 1st year with a garden I was at a loss with what to do. I'm the girl that moved from Alaska to Wisconson and I had asked you some questions and you where so kind and e-mailed me back.
Thanks. I am enjoying my new life here in WI

  2. I'm right there with you. I just pulled out the last of the tomato plants a couple of days ago. I now have no less than three vessels holding tomatoes in various stages of ripeness. I'm still having a hard time believing that once these are gone, I really won't have fresh tomatoes until July.

Good thing I have 39 quarts of canned ones to tide me over . . .

  3. I will be thinking of you eating BLT's today - your own tomatoes, homemade bread and locally raised bacon - WOW! (isn't practically everything better with bacon? Actually, I think everything is better with homemade bread!)

Love the pix of the tomatoes - your bounty is beautiful!

  6. I'm hoping to get at least one tomato off my experimental container garden - squash plants have lots of flowers, already harvesting bok choy and tomatoes have lots of blossoms - don't know if anything will mature but we are looking at another 10 days or so frost free. Amazing what a couple of hundred miles can do. That BLT is truly food fit for a King - I love bacon and adding tomato with REAL bread - OH BABY . whew - glad you are cozy and warm

  7. I love BLT's! Sounds so good!! Our tomatoes did not have a great season this year which makes me so envious of your harvest!

  8. My husband and I just made a double batch of your green tomato relish and love it! Thanks for sharing. We got tons of green tomatoes from our CSA and were glad to have this good recipe to use them in. Thanks again for sending me that lamb flyer. We're looking forward to getting our lamb in a couple weeks.
