Cary

Today is my brother's 36th birthday,
but he died from alcoholism
last December 24th.

He would have absolutely adored Cary.

Look how much life he's missed already.

I am so grateful to all of you who have helped me through these past painful months. One day, one hour, one minute at a time. He is never far from my thoughts. He is dearly missed.

  2. Hi Farmgirl, I tried posting this on your garden blog but the word verification thing wan't working...

That arugula pizza looked lip smacking good!! I bet it would even be good for breakfast!
Do you have your pizza dough recipe posted?

As far as reasons for blanching arugula, among other things, I learned a couple of things in cooking school that may interest you. You already mentioned one... blanching reduces the intense flavor of certain things. We used to blanch garlic to make it less intense. The other thing I learned was blanching maintains the color of things especially when you are going to process them. For example, when making basil or mint oil, blanching in oil or water would keep them from turning a brownish color when churned in a food processor.

Hey, I never have asked about the main reason you maintain a herd of sheep.... is it for the milk to make cheese, or for the wool?

Also, my thoughts are w/ you on your brother's birthday.I'm sure he and Cary would have loved each other.

I hope you have a relaxing holiday weekend.

  3. Alcoholism is a disease that touches many people. My husband died if it too - five years ago.

Anniversaries and birthdays are always time for remembering. The loss of life due to any cause at a tender age is always difficult to deal with.

Time will help. But it is tough, without a doubt.

  4. Oh, that is the sweetest little lamb, and what a lovely tribute to your brother. I cannot imagine losing my brother, or the heartbreak every minute of the day. You're in my thoughts. xo.

  6. (((hugs))) to you on this difficult day. Cary is so beautiful. Perhaps from where your brother is, he can see her and watch over her.

  7. I will have to try your pesto recipe. I imagine a lot of things can be made into pesto. I really liked the young garlic one. Today is my birthday too. I am 36. I'm sorry for your loss. Even though I feel old, 36 is far too young.

  8. Cary is looking very healthy! I'm so glad you have her to care for. Your brother would be/is proud of you. This world is such a harsh place. Those of us who are more sensitive can feel pinned under the weight of things, from time to time. I hope you can forgive your brother for his weakness. Perhaps you can prove to him that there is still something to live and fight for in this crazy and cruel world.

    Take care Farm Girl!

  10. I too think that people who have passed are with us still. I lost my brother in February of last year and I have to say although I have also lost my mom & dad, his death was the hardest and still is at times. My love & prayers to you.

  11. What a nice tribute to your brother! And, you are so right...he has missed a lot this year.
Although I don't comment here often, yours is one of my favourite sites. And, the death of your brother touched me. I worry about my brother, too.

  15. My sister also died from alcoholism. I think about her all the time and what we could be doing now..... It was 9 years ago that she died, and it seems like yesterday at times. She would have loved to blog. And I know she would read Farmgirl Fare. Life is so precious.

  16. Hopefully you will find comfort in your little lamb while keeping your brother's memory alive.

My mother died of alcoholism at age 46. Our household was a nightmare for us kids and now as an adult, I really miss her.

Peace and a hug to you Farmgirl.

  17. It seems we all have someone close that alcoholism has taken from us (my uncle). {{{Hugs}}} to you and your family.

I'm very glad you have Cary (and Bear and Uncle Dan and the Chippers and Molly Doodlebug...) to help out.

Cary's looking wonderful. Is she actually standing on that leg? Yay Cary!

  18. The contravening positive force to the destructive nature of alcohol and drug addiction must be the creation of new life. And what could embody this better than a lamb?

  19. Maybe Cary is his gift to you.

December 2015 update: Hi! For some reason I can't figure out, Blogger hasn't been letting me leave comments on my own blog (!) for the last several months, so I've been unable to respond to your comments and questions. My apologies for any inconvenience! You're always welcome to email me: farmgirlfare AT gmail DOT com.

Hi! Thanks for visiting Farmgirl Fare and taking the time to write. While I'm not always able to reply to every comment, I receive and enjoy reading them all.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and I especially love hearing about your experiences with my recipes. Comments on older posts are always welcome!

Please note that I moderate comments, so if I'm away from the computer it may be a while before yours appears.

I try my best to answer all questions, though sometimes it takes me a few days. And sometimes, I'm sorry to say, they fall through the cracks, and for that I sincerely apologize.
