Sometimes There Simply Aren't Words

Lamb Report: Um, apparently Alice Cooper Night isn't only on Tuesdays. And if this morning's disapproving discourse was any indication, I now have a pretty good idea that Dan (who prefers to sleep up against the barn gate, which is located about two feet from the radio) is not a Non-Stop Classic Rock kind of donkey. Today I will be off the farm until well after dark, so I have decided that the sheep must spend the day locked in the barn with the music on. I cringe at the thought of the flak from the flock I'll no doubt receive upon my return. Current Lamb Count: 16. Decibel Level Of Morning Donkey Rant: Off the charts.

Pssst! My new kitchen garden blog isn't just for gardeners. Two new recipes posted yesterday. Click here and here if you'd like a little taste.

  1. Morning Farmgirl,
I see Dan n Bear are enjoying company.
Remember the rain I asked about yesterday? Someone heard me -- but it only spit on us. I wonder if it will head your way next?

    Have a good day.

  2. For some reason, I sort of have Dan pegged as a Miles Davis fan. :)

  3. Hi Farm Girl,

I tried to post this on your garden blog but it wouldn't let me...

I used to buy green garlic at the ferry plaza farmer's market in SF. Great stuff!

I have a garden question for you... I'm trying to get a garden plot ready in my backyard. The spot is currently covered w/ ivy. I am thinking about renting a roto-tiller to rip up the ivy. How do I keep this pesky s___ from taking over again? What are your suggestions?

  4. Adorable photo! Yes, definitely too cute for words!

Glad to read that your lamb protection measures are working. I wonder what effect classical music would have, or maybe a little opera ... ;-)

  5. Hello Farmgirl, I read your blog every day and so much enjoy the beautiful animal and scenery photos. I feel the loss of your little lambs from all the way here in Maine. The rock music can't be very good for those baby lambs and even the grownups. My suggestion is if you got satellite radio you would have a choice of (many classical, jazz, new age, etc. stations) soothing music 24 hours a day. All your kids would be sleeping well and smiling again.

    Have a great day!

  6. I hope your time off the farm is a good one. I am sure the sheep will have something to say about it. I like oldies classical rock. Will that do for everyone? What about C&W? Too much?
P.S. I love the gardening blog. I will post some of my pictures on the food blog soon-you have inspired my to dig up half my backyard. Does that make you friend or foe?

  7. We have a neighbor with a mama and baby donkey and when I'm home we make a point of walking by to say hello and pet them. They're so cute. My mom brings them apples from time to time, is that ok for them? They certainly seem to LOVE them!

  9. I think they are looking for some peace and quite for a change!! Hee hee.

That would be a *really* cute picture if there was a chicken on Dan's back....

  10. Awww. Bear just wanted some shade! And Uncle Dan was apparently happy to oblige.

  11. I am swooning over Dan. I love him. Silly question...does he sleep laying down or standing up?

  12. Hi Everyone,
With all the hullabaloo of the Comment Moderation Nightmare, some whirlwind sheep activity, and a really big thunderstorm, I missed replying to all your comments and questions here. My apologies. I will be back! : )

  13. I'm baaaaack!

    Hi Heather,
Yep, we finally got some decent rain. Hope you did, too.

    Hi Sher,
Donkey jazz? I can see that. : )

    Hi Bruno,
Sorry you had trouble trying to leave a comment on my garden blog. Don't know what the deal is.

Re your ivy infested garden-to-be plot:
Fortunately I don't have a lot of experience with ivy, but I think that if you make sure you till up the roots, you should be able to permanently eradicate it from your plot. Any shoots that do sprout up should be pulled out ASAP.

Another thing you could do-- depending on what you're hoping to put in your garden plot this year--is buy some weed barrier fabric (try Lowe's or Home Depot or large garden center) and cover the entire space with it. You wouldn't be able to direct seed things like beans or greens, but what you can do is make small slits in the fabric and put in your plants--tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, etc. You can mulch over the fabric or just leave it uncovered. It's supposed to keep weeds from sprouting but does allow air and water to get in.

After a year of having that on, you might find that the ivy has definitely given up.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Tania,
Hmmmm. Not sure about opera (would probably definitely keep the coyotes away, though), but a little classical sure would be more soothing than Non Stop Classic Rock. I think having voices coming out of the radio helps, though--sounds like there are people down in the barn. Crazy people, but people, LOL.

    Hi Felice,
Shhhhhh. Don't tell the sheep we have satellite radio up at the house. I'm not sure another subscription is in the budget. : ) That sure would be great, though. We just love our XM radio--especially since we can't get any regular radio reception at the house. So many fabulous channels and no commercials!

    Hi Vickie,
Country western music? They'd probably all demand cowboy hats to go with the cool dark sunglasses they ordered.

Oh my. I've inspired you to dig up half of your backyard? That's cool--right? LOL, I guess you'll let me know in a month or two. : )

    Hi Mona,
Oh, I bet that baby donkey is too cute for words. I think apples are fine for donkeys. I've given them to Dan, and he loves them, too.

    Hi Alisha,
Oh, I'm sure that's been on the playlist, LOL.

    Hi Jeff,
You're right--that would be a really cute picture if there was a chicken on Dan's back. Now, does anybody know a chicken who might be willing to pose for that photo? Hmmmm. I can't think of anybody.

    Hi Sunidesus,
Ha ha, I love that idea of Dan providing shade for Bear.

    Hi Leigh,
Do we have to get out the smelling salts or are you going to be okay? Donkey Doodle Dandy has the ability to sleep standing up or sitting down. And if you think he's adorable when he's standing, you should see him sitting on the ground with his little legs tucked up under him. I'll have to try to get a photo of him sitting--and make sure you have the smelling salts on hand before I send it to you! : )

December 2015 update: Hi!
